Although many museums offer a free or discounted day every now and then, the Smithsonian Magazine has a great program for free admission to hundreds of museums and cultural attractions across the US. The Catch? Well, the free admission is only good for one day — September 26, 2009 — so you need to plan ahead.
You’ll need a coupon for your free admission, but that’s easy to get too. Just go to microsite.smithsonianmag.com/museumday/about.html to see the list of participating museums, and make your selection. Then fill out the form for your free admission card and print it. It’s really easy.
The goal of the project is to encourage museum visitation throughout the US.
And although I can’t tell you if the hundreds of museums participating in this event are wheelchair-accessible; I can say that for the most part, that information is easy to find. Just surf on over to the museum website. If you can’t find the information there, then give them a call. I’ve always found folks on the museum staff to be very helpful.
And although this is a one day deal, remember there’s free admission to the Smithsonian museums every day of the year. And yes, they all are nicely accessible. My favorite? The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC, of course!
