Want to Carry the Paralympic Torch?

With the Paralympic Games just around the corner, Whistler is putting the finishing touches on their access upgrades, and Vancouver is bracing for an influx of disabled visitors. And the province of British Columbia is looking for a few good Paralympic torchbearers — 200 to be exact. If you live in Canada and are at least 13 years old, it could be you.

Really.

Just go to www.YouGottaBeHere.ca and submit your application. It’s easy. You just have to enter your contact information, choose a location and submit a 250-word essay about how you embody the Paralympic spirit in your everyday life. Winners will be selected in a location-specific random drawing. Some locations have more slots available than others, but there are openings in 11 cities across Canada.

After the random winners are selected, they will be called and asked a mathematical question. Those that answer correctly will be selected as Paralympic torchbearers.

All torchbearers are required to provide their own transportation to the relay starting point, and they get to keep their torchbearer uniform.

Applications will be accepted until 11:59 PM on January 6, 2010.

It’s a cool opportunity, and since it doesn’t cost anything to enter, I encourage everyone to give it a shot. After all, someone has to win, so why not you?

Good Luck. And let me know if you are selected.
