de Young Announces 2011 Access Days

I just love the de Young Museum. It’s one of my favorite places to visit in San Francisco. Not only do they have some great exhibitions, but they really go above and beyond in the access department. Case and point are the special Access Days they hold for nearly every exhibition. On these days, admission is discounted and is by appointment only. This eases up on the crowds and gives wheelers and slow walkers a better opportunity to see (and enjoy) the exhibition.

So if your interested in Mexico’s Masterworks or the upcoming Picasso exhibition, then mark your calendar for these 2011 Access Days.

Olmec: Colossal Masterworks of Ancient Mexico

This exhibition features more than 100 objects from America’s oldest civilization and includes the enormous heads for which the Olmec are best known. I haven’t seen it yet, but have talked to several folks who were simply wowed by the press preview. It’s set to run through May 8, with the Access Day slated for March 28.

Admission on Access Day is just $5 per person for non-members, with no charge for members. There are also some free tickets available for those in financial need.

Access Day Features

  • Extra Accessible Parking
  • Wheelchairs and folding stools available on a first-come basis
  • Extra seating inside and outside the exhibition
  • Docents on hand to provide information

Picasso: Masterpieces from the Musee National Picasso, Paris

Slated to run from June 11 to October 9, this exhibition will feature more than 100 paintings and sculptures spanning the length of Picasso’s career. I’m definitely marking my calendar for this one, as I’ve seen the collection in Paris and it’s spectacular. Two Access Days are scheduled for this exhibition — June 20 and August 29.

Access Day admission is $10 for non-members, with some $5 tickets available to those in financial need. Members are admitted free.
