Houmas House is located about an hour from New Orleans on the banks of the Mississippi River. This one-time sugar plantation has been restored to its former glory and is open for tours. It was also the filming location for the movie Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte.
One of the great things about this site is that’s it’s totally wheelchair-accessible — there’s even an elevator to the second floor of the plantation house. It’s also a very unique site because the owner actually lives there, so guests are invited to touch objects and sit on the furniture. It’s not often you get to touch a clock that was owned by Marie Antoinette.
And once you’re done with the house tour, save some time for a tour of the beautiful gardens. Again, great care has been taken to make all of the paths wheelchair-accessible. And if you’re hungry, then stop by the excellent on-site restaurant for a lunch (they also serve dinner in the evenings, as well as a killer Sunday brunch).
Houmas House is a must-see on any Gulf Coast itinerary, so stop by next time you’re in the neighborhood.
