Every year around this time I’m inundated with questions about how to get ADA tickets to the Super Bowl. To be honest, it’s basically the luck of the draw; and to understand this, you have to understand how Super Bowl tickets are allocated.
The bulk of the Super Bowl tickets are distributed to the NFL players and coaches, with some held back for the AFC and NFC season ticket holders, and of course sponsors.
From there it gets a bit complicated. Many tickets are sold to ticket brokers by the players and coaches; and although the NFL prohibits players and coaches from selling them for more than face value, in reality this policy isn’t strictly enforced. And then the ticket brokers mark them up and sell them to regular folks.
AFC and NFC season tickets holders are usually entered into a lottery for a chance to purchase Super Bowl tickets, and sponsors typically use their tickets as employee perks and incentives.
And then there are the ADA tickets. For those, you have to plan ahead, as they usually aren’t available through the ticket brokers, unless some of the players and coaches request them, and to do that they would have to have a disability. Why? Because the NFL prohibits able-bodied people from using ADA tickets. But that’s a very good thing.
The good news is that they do have a lottery for the right to buy one wheelchair seat and one companion seat. The bad news? The lottery runs from February 1 to September 1, of the year preceding the game in question. So if you wanted in on the lottery for the 2014 Super Bowl, you would have to had entered it between February 1, 2013 and September 1, 2013. The number of accessible seats available varies from year to year, as that’s dependent on the venue.
Of course, it’s always possible that somebody who purchased an ADA ticket in the lottery will sell it to a ticket broker, so you can always give that a shot. But the best deal is available through the lottery.
So start planning for next year. To enter the ADA ticket lottery, send your name, full address, phone number and e-mail to:
Super Bowl ADA Random Drawing
345 Park Avenue
New York, NY 10154
Lottery entrants will be notified of their status in late October or early November.
So give it s shot. You never know, you might get lucky!
