I don’t really post too many political things here, but I’d like to take a moment to encourage all of my Florida friends to give a shout out to their state legislators in support of Governor Rick Scott’s recommended 2017 budget — especially where Florida State Parks are concerned!
The governor’s proposed budget includes more than $50 million for state park enhancements, management and facility improvements. And that’s a 17% increase from the 2016 budget. Even better, the budget earmarks $4 million specifically for ADA repairs and to remove more access barriers.
I was pretty impressed with access in the state park system when I researched Barrier-Free Travel; Favorite Florida State Parks for Wheelers and Slow Walkers, but there’s always room for improvement access-wise. And this money will go a long way. Additionally, since the publication of the book I’ve met the Accessibility Manager for the parks, and she’s quite enthusiastic. I love fact that she’s a recreational therapist, as she tends to take a more inclusive look at outdoor recreation.
In any case, this is a great cause to support, so give your state representative a ring and tell them to vote for the increased budget for Florida State Parks in 2017. In the end it will really benefit everybody!
