DOT Forum to Address Accessible Air Travel

In an effort to make accessible air travel a better experience for wheelchair-users and slow walkers, the Department of Transportation (DOT) will hold a public meeting, to get input on accessible air travel from both the airlines and consumers.

At this virtual meeting, wheelchair-users will detail problems they have encountered with accessible air travel. Airline representatives will then discuss the challenges they face accommodating disabled travelers, and also elaborate on the actions they are taking to improve the accessible air travel experience.

The DOT is looking to gather more information on these four key topics.

  • Challenges encountered by wheelchair-users during air travel, and their impact
  • How to prevent or minimize damaged, delayed and lost wheelchairs
  • How to ensure safe transfers in the cabin
  • Best practices for assisting passengers when wheelchair damage occurs

This feedback will ultimately assist the DOT when it comes time to update the Air Carrier Access Act.

The meeting will be held on March 24, 2022 from 10:15 AM to 5:30 PM (ET).

There’s no charge to attend the meeting, but advance registration is required. Questions should be directed to Chris Miller, Attorney-Advisor, at
