As a writer who has spent the last 20-some years visiting and writing about wheelchair access in our US national parks, (and just released a book about accessible national park lodges — www.BFNationalParkLodges.com), I’ve seen a lot of changes in the parks over the years. Some of the changes are due to the availability of new technology and equipment, but the bulk of them have been spurred on by increased visitation to these national treasures. Continue reading

A Great Accessible Cruise Resource!
If you’ve always wanted to take a cruise, but thought you couldn’t because you use a wheelchair, then pick up a copy of Sylvia Longmire’s new book Everything You Need to Know about Wheelchair Accessible Cruising and get ready for that bon voyage party. Not only does this well-researched resource give you the nuts and bolts of accessible cruise travel, but it also includes information on what each cruise line offers in terms of service and ambiance as well as their demographics. Longmire also points out the most accessible ships, includes helpful information for choosing an itinerary, and even offers her own personal access reviews on a number of itineraries that she has sailed.
Excellent Virginia Road Trip Book
If a Virginia road trip is in your future, be sure and pick up a copy of Virginia Off the Beaten Path, by Judy Colbert. Although the book doesn’t specifically list access (see judy’s reply to my first question below) it’s a great idea book. And if you like to find those off-the-beaten-path gems like I do, then this is the book for you. Continue reading
Excellent Route 66 Guide
As a self-defined Route 66 junkie, I’m thrilled to see more guidebooks on the Mother Road. Some are better than others, and that’s certainly the case with Amy Bizzarri’s, The Best Hits on Route 66. If nothing else this well-illustrated guide gets you in the mood for a road trip; but beyond that, it’s filled with useful information on a plethora of roadside attractions along the way. New Grand Canyon Access Resource Now Available
Just in time for the 100th birthday of Grand Canyon National Park, I’ve released my newest accessible travel title — Barrier-Free Travel; The Grand Canyon for Wheelers and Slow Walkers (www.barrierfreegrandcanyon.com). Not only does this helpful resource include Grand Canyon access information for wheelchair-users and slow walkers, but it also features a comprehensive access guide to Arizona’s Interstate 40 and Route 66.
Great Road Trip Resource!
If you’re headed to Arizona or New Mexico in the near future, be sure and pick up a copy of RoadTrip America Arizona and New Mexico: 25 Scenic Side Trips, before you hit the road. As someone who has logged a lot of miles in both states, I can absolutely tell you that author Rick Quinn really hit it out of the park with this title. Continue reading
Hitting the Road Again
Well we’re off on another road trip adventure to do some research for my next book. And although this trip won’t take us as far as we usually venture, it will require an extended stay near the national parks that we will be covering – Glacier, Yellowstone and Grand Teton. Continue reading
Hot off the Press – My New Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon Book!
I’m thrilled to announce the release of my latest accessible travel title – “Barrier-Free Travel; Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks for Wheelers and Slow Walkers”. I had a great time researching this book – partly because I grew up in the area and I have fond memories of exploring Yosemite with my dad, but also because I now live close to the parks. And after 40 years of writing travel I’ve finally penned a book about my home turf! It’s about time. Continue reading
Great Route 66 Resource
As an author I’m particularly critical about travel books, as I know what kind of in-depth research it takes to produce a good one. And gladly Drew Knowles does too, as his Route 66 Adventure Handbook is an excellent resource for anyone who wants to explore the Mother Road. Continue reading
Catch These Grand Canyon Winter Deals
When I was researching my Barrier-Free Grand Canyon book, I remember the front desk supervisor at El Tovar telling me that winter was the best time to visit the park, as not only are their fewer people there at that time, but you can also snag some pretty good deals if you shop around. And you know what — she’s right! With that in mind, here are a few money saving deals in one of my favorite national parks. Continue reading
